Workshop Tutorials

On Sunday, July 26th a pre-workshop tutorial on “POD Basics” will be held.

The first Workshop Day (Monday)

The first day will start together with the general QNDE Plenary Session. Our Workshop will contribute with a keynote lecture on human factors in reliability of NDE.

In the afternoon, the introductory session will deal with the history and the current advances in the “Holistic Concept of NDE Reliability”. The session aims to highlight the current challenges of dealing with real and artificial defects aiming to describe the reliability of inspections on real components and defects with affordable means, and address implications of the appropriate information flow and the balance of regulations versus culture for the broader organizational context.

The morning session of the second Workshop day will focus on the new scientific insights to make the methods for the measurement of reliability and validation more efficient and comprehensive:

  1. Design of experiments, sampling inspection
  2. Multi Parameter POD (extended a)
  3. Data Field POD (extended â), Observer model
  4. Receiver Operating Characteristics for specified conditions, dealing with false calls
  5. Minimum effort approaches
  6. Modeling based methods MAPOD and PICASSO
  7. Combining different sources e.g. with Bayesian approach to deal with real/in the field data

In the afternoon, we will deal with specific demands and solutions for the specific industrial applications:

  1. Aerospace, automotive and other transportation
  2. Reliability of NDE for railway components
  3. Nuclear power: NDE reliability (performance demonstration/qualification/ENIQ methodology);approach to the decrease in motivation during the closure of power plants; chemical industry
  4. Certification in NDE societies

The third Workshop Day (Wednesday)

The morning session of the last Workshop day will explore the newest trends in the systematic approach to human factors and the organization. The aim of this session is to improve the exchange of information between the scientists and the practitioners and to join different disciplines together.

Do the existing requirements and regulations for the NDE professional and NDE providers enable reliable NDE? (this might cover: education, qualification, workplace features, procedures, advisory roles, regulations between NDE provider and end users, etc.).
The afternoon session will be devoted to Open Space Technology Workshop

The “Open Space Technology” (OST) – format was selected to replace the “break-out-sessions”- format from the former workshops, in which a specific goal for each working group was defined beforehand. The underlying principle of an OST workshop, developed by Harrison Owen in the sixties, and ideal for large groups, is to allow the people to work on a topic that interests them. It works on a principle that offers participants complete freedom in the choice of the topic, the duration, the participants, and the flow of the discussion; and resides on a “law of two feet”, which allows the participants to move from one discussion point to another and to leave the discussion, if it no longer pleases them.

In the preparation of the Open Space Technology discussion, to be held on the last day of the Workshop, every participant has the possibility to place questions or urgent issues on a wall of ideas. In the open forum about 6 groups of interest shall be formed based on the questions on the wall. The groups shall separate and, under the lead of  selected moderators, the different issues shall be discussed. At the end of the day, the groups will recollect and present the content and the result of their work during the closing of the Workshop.

The results of the last workshop and open space forum and summarized:

Bertovic et al. —» Summary of the OST discussions on reliability of NDE (pdf, 91 kB)
Müller, Holstein, Bertovic —» Conclusions of the 5th EAW (pdf, 77 kB)
Müller, Bertovic, Kanzler, Ronneteg —» Conclusions of the 6th European American Workshop on Reliability of NDE

In conclusion, selected group moderators shall write a summary of the discussion, which will be available in the Workshop Proceedings under the title “Summary of the Open Space Technology Discussions”.

Call for Papers and Posters

Dear colleagues, we kindly ask you to hand in abstracts for papers and posters devoted to one or more of the above mentioned objectives or even to new topics which are related to NDE reliability.
Please send them to christina.mueller@bam.de until April 27th 2015.
